An Australian scientist who developed the cervical cancer vaccine says new research about possible side effects actually shows the vaccine is safe.
A study on 7 million American women, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found 12,000 reports of minor side effects, such as dizziness.
About 6 per cent of the adverse side effects that were reported were described as serious.
Professor Ian Frazer says it is a good score card.
"The findings on Gardasil that have been announced in this paper are actually very reassuring, because what they show is that this vaccine is safe, like all the other vaccines that we have," he said.
"There've been a few incidents of people fainting, a few incidents of people getting a sore arm from the vaccine, but apart from that there's nothing that's been attributed to the vaccine that would give any cause for concern."
